R8 RANDWICK01 April 2017
T J Smith Stakes G1 OPEN ($2,614,500), 1200m 1:12.44
Race Synopsis: Chautauqua was simply brilliant in taking out this race for a third successive year. He settled at the tail of the 15-horse field as expected, angled between runners on straightening (under riding) before Tommy Berry switched him deep and into clear running at the 200m, where he was still conceding the leader about ten lengths. He then came with a powerful finish to overwhelm his opposition. English was much more handily placed than expected and settled in fourth place on the rails from her inside barrier (1). She moved up well at the 300m, looked the winner when she dashed to the front at the 100m but she could not hold off the brilliant late burst of the winner to finish a very good second. Fell Swoop went to the front, was pressured and headed in the early stages (by Russian Revolution) after a quick first 600m (35.36). He then got through on the inner to take a clear advantage at the 300m and then held on really well after working most of the race. Tivaci ran on well from eighth at the home turn for (3.3 lengths) fourth while Voodoo Lad made good ground along the rails from ninth at the home turn to finish (3.7 lengths) fifth. The favourite Russian Revolution showed pace from his wide barrier (10) and came across to almost cross to a clear lead. He still challenged strongly at the home turn before weakening over the latter stages to finish (5.2 lengths) sixth after a difficult trip.
